Join The Club

Write a scene or story that involves a character being in some sort of club. It could be a dance club, a group of friends that plays Dungeons & Dragons, the local Moose lodge, high school clique, etc.

Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club, in which a man who feels powerless finds power through starting a ring of underground clubs, provides interesting fodder for a story. What if he had started a book club, crochet circle, competitive Scrabble league, or just bought a Sam’s Club membership? The story might be a little different.

Write Like Studio Ghibli

Write a scene or story based on one of these premises inspired by Studio Ghibli.

This week’s writing prompt will take inspiration from Studio Ghibli films, because they are some of the best films ever made and have been keeping my spirits up during quarantine.

Mega Replay

This week’s writing prompt takes its inspiration from the improv game mega replay.

Photo: Sam McGhee on Unsplash

For the game of Mega Replay, improvisers are asked to act out a scene based on an audience suggestion. Then, they must perform the same scene but alter it according to new audience suggestions: performing the scene in the style of a horror movie if the suggestion is “scared;” approaching the scene from the viewpoint of a calculus student when the suggestion is “math;” performing the scene like a Western when the suggestion is “1850;” etc.

Creative writing prompt: Take a story you’ve written, or your favorite classic story. Now tell a different version of that story, changing the genre or the main character’s occupation.

A Different Match

Start a retelling of a classic tale in which the romantic pairings of characters are altered.

How different would Pride and Prejudice have been if Elizabeth Bennet accepted the marriage proposal from Mr. Collins? Would the fate of Middlemarch characters still be the same if Dorothea Brooke had met Dr. Lydgate before Rev. Casaubon? What would The Sun Also Rises look like if every male character wasn’t vying for the affection of Lady Brett Ashley?
